We're Closing This Afternoon for Fair Day!

(image via MissouriHistoryMuseum) Missouri, not Texas, but still a cool photo.

The State Fair of Texas, y'all!!! We're closing this afternoon for some family time at the
Fair today. Our ShopKid has the afternoon off, we have our donations to The North Texas
Food Bank
for our $5 tickets, and the weather couldn't be better for a day out!

We'll be open at normal time tomorrow, Saturday morning at 10:00am.
Hope to see y'all out today!

The Working Proof

(images via TheWorkingProof) From Clockwise from upper left - Sandro Juto (we looove her 1,2),
Sergio Membrillas (mega awesome!), Stacy Rozich (just our kind of whacky!) Amy Borrell (so so sweet).

They say it best:
The Working Proof seeks to promote art and social responsibility. Each print is paired
with a charity of the artist's choice, to which we are donating 15% of the sale of each print -
creating what we believe to be a product with not just aesthetic, but social value. Besides
showcasing emerging artists and great artwork, the intent of the Working Proof is to promote
a variety of charities and to expose them to new supporters through the appreciation of art
and creativity...

What's not to like.

Just Bento - Not Just Plastic...

(image via JustBento) Mr. Eno, a master silkscreen craftsman, makie-shi

Just Bento may just be our new favorite website. By posting great recipes and cute
bentos (that Jully makes for ShopKid), the site really promotes a healthy balanced
lifestyle, something that's been on our minds this week. We get asked all the time
what the bentos in our shop are for and thought that this post from Just Bento of
their recent tour of the Hakoya bento makers in Ishikawa, Japan would be interesting
to some folks. The handmade laquer boxes undergoes various hours of treatment and
layering and all the designs are hand silk screened by master craftsmen and women.
Because they are done so seamlessly these beautiful boxes are often mistaken for
plastic. Japanese quality, man.

Also, check out Just Bento's sister site Just Hungry for some other great recipes.

We are always rushing around the shop. So many things to do... But, one thing that we
do take our time to do and enjoy daily (thanks to Jully's insistence) is to sit down and
have lunch together. We eat good food and take our time and it's just a really productive
way to balance the crazy in our lives. These badass Manga Plates from Japanese art
student Mika Tsutai seem to really capture that idea by "transforming your dinner table
into a story
..." Also, absolutely love this perfect food styling and setting.

Packed House!

Fallout Gallery Show

Thank you so much everyone that came out Friday night for the Fallout Gallery Show!
We're so happy that so many people came out to support four truly talented artists
(and genuinely nice people). Can't think of anything more gratifying than seeing Dallas's
creative community supporting each other. Apologies in advance for the lack of party-
happening pics, we were having such a good time that we forgot to bring out the camera.

Once again, thanks to Leah, Roger, Kyle, and Brandon for bringing such great work
to our shop.

Kyle Steed - original artwork and letterpress prints.

Roger Peters - beautiful landscape photography

Brandon Thibodeaux - dramatic black and white photos

Leah Duncan - all new prints with amazing textile details

Vinyl Thoughts

Vinyl Thoughts

This past Thursday, we went out to Quixotic World ("Theatre House and Magikal Event
House!") in Deep Ellum to check out the awesome Vinyl Thoughts, a custom designer
toy show. Really great night with a full house, free drinks, and great range of customized
figurines showcasing some of Dallas's awesome creative talent.

Mika Sato

Came across Toronto textile artist Mika Sato's work yesterday while poking through her
workspace. The muted colors, organic textures and quirky medium really downplay the
somber imagery. Love that complicated stuff.
