Earth Dog is inspired by the Chinese New Year of 2018, which combined the sign of the Dog with the element of Earth. This pairing brought to mind the poignant story of Laika, the first dog launched into space in 1957. In this illustration, artist Alex Hanke reimagines Laika as a heroic explorer, suited up and ready to journey into the cosmos—symbolizing the collaboration and shared wonder between humans and animals.
