Pull up a stool beside the easel: this is the tale of Addeline Griswold, better known under her fearless alter-ego Burger Babie—a self-taught creator carving out a world where childlike wonder collides with adult truth, one quirky brush-stroke at a time.  Today Addeline calls Fort Wayne, Indiana home. Her studio is modest, local, and vibrant—proof that big, bold art doesn’t have to live in big, fancy cities. 

Addeline’s creative instinct arrived early—coloring outside the lines, doodling in margins, and sketching scenes no one else thought would ever become “art.” But it wasn’t until her early 20s, when she stopped drinking and turned the mirror inwards, that things changed. She began studying her own moments of annoyance, glimpses of absurdity in everyday life, and the weird little thoughts we all tuck away. From that bedrock of the mundane — the dishes, the traffic, the wandering mind — Burger Babie was born. 

At first glance, an illustration by Burger Babie feels charming: pastel-tinged animals, bold outlines, vintage children’s-book energy. Then you look again. The smiling cat may be pondering existential dread. The dog may be plotting to snack on your soul. Addeline describes her work as “child-like art for adults. From a distance it looks sweet and innocent, but the longer you look at it, it can get a little depressing and real… but in a funny way, I hope.”  Her inspirations are eclectic: old tattoo flash sheets, antique store color palettes, folk art textures, and the quiet annoyances of modern living. 

In a world where so much art tries to dazzle with grandeur, Burger Babie chooses the reverse: approachable visuals, hidden bite. The pieces feel personal yet universal because we all hold those in-between thoughts—“Why am I in traffic?” “Why is the baby crying?” “Why am I still looking at this?” Addeline gives them form and color. Her art gives permission to admit: the world is weird. Life is absurd. And that’s okay.
