A faceted quartz crystal known as a Herkimer diamond, named for the New York county where these clear, naturally terminated stones are found, painted like a prized specimen. Light fractures inside the facets into flashes of pink, blue and violet, while smoky graphite and black planes anchor the crystal against a pale lavender ground. It's a study in how much color can hide inside something clear, from Oklahoma City oil painter Trisha Thompson Adams.
