Yellow chrysanthemums and orange lilies crowd a deep blue ground, with purple statice and lavender blooms filling the gaps. Chow mixes two kinds of painting here: some flowers are modelled and lit, others are flat cut-out shapes in red and turquoise sitting right on the surface. The blue behind them does the heavy lifting, making every yellow louder than it has any right to be.
This print comes from Language of Flowers, a series of oil paintings in which Esther Chow works close in on cut blooms and the patterned surfaces behind them until it is hard to say which one is the subject. The series is looser and louder than her landscape work, and colour carries most of it.
