Two bare plane trees split the frame, and behind them a wall of pink-red brick runs the length of the block — window units bolted on at odd heights, laundry strung out to dry, a blue canopy tucked into the gap between buildings. A taxi-stand sign hangs at the left. At the bus stop below, a woman in a green coat waits with a shopping bag, a mother and child stand together, and a boy leans against the railing looking at his phone. The road in front is empty and grey. Nothing is happening, which is exactly the point.
Longchang Road is in Yangpu, and the artist notes that it has become famous in recent years because the Longchang Apartments nearby look so much like the Pig Sty Alley from Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle. The buildings drawn here have a different history: originally dormitories for a Japanese textile mill, built more generously than most because they housed manager-level staff. Yu Feng has said the grandmother and grandson at the bus stop remind her of her own grandfather collecting her from school.
